Breast Asymmetry Correction

Breast Asymmetry Correction (Poland Syndrome)

If you have a size or shape difference between your breasts known as breast asymmetry or poland sydrome, we can improve it with surgery. Treatment may include a breast uplift, reduction or enlargement – all of which can be discussed with your consultant plastic surgeon at a free, no obligation consultation.

Considering Breast Asymmetry Correction?

It is very common to have a slight difference in the shape and size of your breasts. Other parts of our body are not symmetrical and this is also the case with breast tissue. In most cases this is mild and may not be severe enough to consider surgery.

One of the known causes of asymmetrical breasts is poland’s syndrome. Poland’s syndrome results in a reduction in the size of one of your breasts and sometimes the underlying chest muscle and rib cage. It is thought to be caused by insufficient blood supply to the breast area during childhood. It is known to affect the right side more commonly than the left and is actually more common in males but more noticeable in females due to their increased breast development. It can also be associated with abnormalities in the arm and hand on the affected side. Most people who experience breast asymmetry don’t suffer from this syndrome and the cause of the asymmetry is actually unknown.

If you are concerned that your breasts are asymmetrical it might be worth arranging a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss what can be done to improve this. Breast asymmetry is not considered a dangerous disorder unless your breasts have recently developed asymmetry. If you have noticed any recent change in your breast shape or a discharge from your nipple we would advise you to schedule an appointment with your General Practitioner.

How will it impact your life?

Prior to their breast asymmetry correction many of our patients found it very difficult growing up as they started to realise their breasts were different to other women, causing distress and embarrassment. Improving the symmetry of your breasts with cosmetic surgery can make you both look and feel better. You will no longer have to disguise your breasts, or be limited to certain types of clothing which can significantly boost your self-esteem. Our surgeons actually find this area of plastic surgery one of the most rewarding as it makes people feel much better about themselves and improves their quality of life.

Is Breast Asymmetry Correction right for you?

The best solution for you varies between each person as the appearance of breast asymmetry is variable. Questions you should ask yourself are:

  • Do you prefer the volume of the larger or smaller breast?
  • Do you think your nipples are in a low position?
  • Are your nipples and the brown area around them (the areola) normal?
  • Are your breasts a normal shape?
